Teen killed, another injured in Georgia crash; driver arrested

One high school student in Cherokee County, Georgia, was killed and another seriously injured in a single-car crash recently. The driver of the car, their 17-year-old classmate, was arrested and faces a number of charges, including first-degree vehicular homicide.

The crash occurred when four teenagers, students at Creekview High School in Canton, Georgia, were in the car, which was traveling on Old Orange Mill Road. The car struck a tree after it went down an embankment; investigators preliminarily said speed could have been a reason for the wreck.

The teen driver was arrested, booked and held without bond at the Cherokee County Adult Detention Center. He additionally was charged with serious injury by vehicle, failure to maintain lane and reckless driving, according to the Cherokee sheriff's spokesman.

The young man who was killed was sitting in the front seat and pronounced dead on site. The driver was hospitalized and released.

Of the two passengers in the back seat, a 15-year-old was released from the hospital while a 17-year-old boy faces an expectedly long recovery from numerous injuries that include fractures to his neck and wrist and bruised lungs.

The boy who was injured and the boy who was killed were teammates on the track and field team at their school. The team put on its Facebook page that the injured boy "has a long road ahead, with lots of physical therapy in his future."

The costs for that physical therapy and future medical bills could be substantial. Another family has lost its son. An attorney with experience in personal injury cases could fight to help the families get the help they need to pay medical and funeral costs.
