9 safety tips for putting up lights this holiday season

It’s that time of year again, time to put up the holiday decorations. For many people here in Georgia, holiday decorating involves putting up Christmas lights on their house. When putting up such lights, it is not just important to think about what will look the best. It is also important to think about safety.

There are various safety risks that could come up in connection to Christmas lights. This includes fire, electric shock and tripping risks. There are also the risks of falling when putting up such lights.

However, there are steps homeowners can take to reduce these risks and keep their light displays safe when putting up holiday lights. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind when decorating the outside of your home:

  • Only use outdoor lights when putting up lights outside
  • Check lights for frays and loose bulbs prior to putting them up
  • Don’t use lights that have cords that are in poor condition
  • Make sure the lights are unplugged before changing bulbs
  • Avoid overloading electrical circuits
  • Don’t put up lights with staples or nails, as this could create electrical shock risks
  • Keep light cords out of outdoor walkways
  • Exercise proper care when using a ladder to put up lights
  • After the lights are up, always turn them off before going to sleep

Now, sometimes, things outside of a homeowner’s control lead to lights and other decorations he or she put up creating major safety risks. This includes the decorations he or she put up containing safety defects. When injuries occur due to defects in lights or other decorative products, product liability claims may be able to help victims with securing compensation.
